Afrotheria is a superorder of African mammals that includes elephants, tenrecs and their close relatives, and diverged around ~79.8 Ma ago. Its history begins while the modern continents were becoming recognisable, though the Atlantic was still opening and Gondwanan fragments were continuing to separate.
